Get To Know Me: Retirement
The eighth year of local music festival, VanFest, is taking place on Saturday, August 25 at Royal Arch Masonic Park in Maple Valley. To celebrate the little fest that could, we're spending the next two months highlighting the bands playing VanFest 8. Today, get to know local and soon to be retired indie band Retirement.
When my brother Will and I teamed up with guitarist Geoff Joynes in the summer of 2014, we set out to write pop-minded indie rock songs. We outgrew that goal pretty quickly when we added bassist Troy Dennison and started to head in the direction the wind was blowing. The range of songs on this playlist inspired us to pursue a heavier, darker sound. We never could figure out what genre we wanted to be, perhaps because one day we'd try to sound like Weed and the next day we'd jam on something influenced by Mogwai. My brother and I were always interested in the 90s emo tone of I Hate Myself, while Geoff preferred the sound of post-hardcore bands like Unwound. Whether successfully or not, we became a hodgepodge of all our favorite bands.
Now that Retirement is coming to an end, it's been fun to put this playlist together and see how much we've changed since the first songs we wrote together. We'll be releasing one last EP of three songs this Fall and our last shows will include Vanfest in August and Spokane, Bellingham, Portland and Seattle in September.
