Babes Around Town: CHBP 2018 Edition

FRIDAY

WHO: PHESO

WHERE: VERA STAGE

WHEN: 4 PM - 4:30 PM

Pheso’s Friday afternoon set has been a long time coming, and was certainly well-earned. Securing his slot after placing second in this year’s BeatMatch, Pheso (otherwise known as Joe Dillion) has been on his grind as one of the more talented producers in Seattle for awhile, accompanied by his crew LightWav Music. Learn more about the man behind the music from when we spoke to him leading up to the competition that led him to CHBP.

WHO: YAEJI

WHERE: MAIN STAGE

WHEN: 5:15 PM - 6 PM

If you, like me, have a propensity to be dumb af and put off buying concert tickets until the last minute, then you might have also missed your chance to Yaeji the last time she came through Seattle. Don’t fuck up again and make sure to get to the Main Stage nice and early to catch the clean and cutting house-inspired music.

WHO: THE BLACK TONES

WHERE: BARBOZA STAGE

WHEN: 7:30 PM - 8 PM

Self-described as a bluesy rock n roll band, The Black Tones have been building a momentum that they’re sure to demonstrate in full force. Whether being chosen by the Seattle Public Library Playback Series as one of fifty artists representative of the city or being featured on the TV show “Dear White People,” the group’s crafted songs are sure to settle you into the night to come. Listen to the musicians that inspired The Black Tones’ own music here, and catch them at their set at VanFest at Royal Arch Park on August 25th

WHO: NAVVI

WHERE: NEUMOS STAGE

WHEN: 11:15 PM - 12:12 AM

In may become apparent throughout this read that I’m pretty good at being late to the game. I caught my first Navvi set the other week when they played the Central Saloon, and I know I didn’t pay enough money to get to experience what I did. Kristin Henry’s vocals were delivered with a blissful grace, only to be further transcended by the electrifying elements of Brad Boettger’s polished yet goth-goes-to-the warehouse-rave production.

SATURDAY

WHO: SPIRIT AWARD

WHERE: MAIN STAGE

WHEN: 2:15 PM - 3 PM

I could be literally one of the worst humans and make all the puns about getting in the spirit of the second day of CHBP, but I’ll go ahead and not and leave the plague of corniess to now invade your brain. Despite that opener, you’d be a right fool not to catch Spirit Award as they take to the Main Stage to start off the afternoon. Let all the little psych-pop caterpillars in your heart blossom into the butterflies they are, courtesy of the sonic stylings of one of Seattle’s finest.

WHO: HIBOU

WHERE: NEUMOS STAGE

WHEN: 5:15 PM - 6 PM

Hibou (the project of Peter Michel) makes sun-soaked dreampop perfect for a lazy summer day. This year he released his sophomore album, Something Familiar, which has gotten Michel rave reviews, taking him from the bedroom closet (where he recorded his debut album) to the CHBP Neumos stage. Can't wait to vibe to his set.

WHO: PARISALEXA

WHERE: VERA STAGE

WHEN: 6:15 PM - 7 PM

Comfortably holding court over three different artistic pursuits, be sure to catch Parisalexa exercising her expertise as a singer, songwriter and producer on Saturday evening. Her blend of R&B and pop serves just the right intoxicant to thrust you into the evening.

WHO: FALON SIERRA

WHERE: BARBOZA STAGE

WHEN: 6:45 PM - 7:15 PM

Listening to Falon Sierra is akin to sleeping in silk pajamas in silk sheets, while your mind ascends to a dreamy state only achieved once the mind and body is brought to a peaceful state. Mixing elements of soul and pop with underlying beats that draw you out and drag you under, better be there.

SUNDAY

WHO: CHONG THE NOMAD

WHERE: VERA STAGE

WHEN: 4 PM - 4:30 PM

Executing a surgeon-like precision, DJ Chong the Nomad delivers amazingly clean yet dirty (you know, in the shake your ass way) tracks that both encompass and uplift the listener. With a couple other festivals under her belt, be sure to see her shine on some home turf.

WHO: PSA

WHERE: CHA CHA STAGE

WHEN: 5:45 PM - 6:15 PM

Find yourself descending the steps into the Cha Cha, instantly greeted by the in-your-face and undeniable pop fusion of PSA. Playing CHBP for the first time and bringing the creative energy that only comes with living in the passionate blur of creating your first album - see PSA as a skilled ball of fervor, delivering an eloquent brashness of take-no-prisoners pop melodies accompanied by diving basslines and uplifting hooks. Come hang with all of DMM, and get ready for PSA’s EP Release Show at Gold Bar on August 24th.

WHO: STEAL SHIT DO DRUGS

WHERE: CHA CHA STAGE

WHEN: 6:45 PM - 7:15 PM

Judge me, you know idgaf, but I was admittedly first drawn to the band solely based off the very inspiring name. (And it’s okay to be honest about it if you were too.) The initial shock factor worked, after listening to their latest EP Trash Can Demos I’m counting down the minutes until I can see them live. A cocktail of garage, punk and new wave, SSDD meet all your angsty, seeking-yet-unfilled needs.

WHO: LA FONDA

WHERE: BARBOZA STAGE

WHEN: 8 PM - 9 PM

You’ve probably seen La Fonda at The Crocodile, Vera Project, or a number of other Seattle venues in the past few months. The group seems to be on a meteoric rise, and not without good reason. Founded by sisters Veronica and Valerie Topacio, the sunshine-y pop is the perfect way to bring one of the best weekends of the summer to a close.
