Get To Know Me: Stay Happy Collective's
For our Get To Know Me playlist series we reach out to various musicians, artists, writers and tastemakers throughout the Seattle area in order to gain a better understanding of their personal inspirations, what music has formed their worldview and how it spurs them to keep Seattle's scenes thriving. Over the course of the next few weeks we're shining the spotlight on the Stay Happy Collective, a group of artists that showcase art and music at various events throughout the city and every First Thursday at The Central Saloon as a part of Pioneer Square Art Walk. Meet Mike, a stalwart member of the Stay Happy team who made the playlist to keep you feeling and acting fly.
These are the songs that shaped my musical persona, from an awkward preteen to an awkward adult. The playlist is relatively chronological with a few randoms thrown in, beginning with my 90s alternative rock phase as a kid and developing into a love for classic rock that took me from high school into college.
Once in college I stumbled upon Jeru the Damaja, A Tribe Called Quest and Big L, and immediately knew that hip hop was for me; consuming as much of it as I could find...no matter how obscure. I grew to love hip hop so much that I couldn't help but make my own attempts at creating it (both rapping and producing) and this lead me to digging deep into classic soul while looking for samples for my beats. I realized that I preferred the original songs that my favorite hip hop songs sampled from and since then have continually listened to soul more than just about any other genre.
